Biography: I was born and grew up in Kyoto, Japan. In my twenties, I came to Eugene, Oregon to study Art History at the University of Oregon. Then I completed the MFA Program in Painting at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst. While I was a graduate student majoring in oil painting, I discovered the watercolor medium as a major artistic expression. Currently, I continue my artistic pursuit in several different media such as watercolor and Sumi ink. These aqueous mediums keep my deep artistic and emotional ties to Japan.
I have taught art at the Lane Community College for 30 years until I retired in 2016. At the University of Oregon, I initiated an Italian pléin-air painting program in Italy in 1996 and was the director of the program between 1998 and 2005. I was then invited to teach outdoor paining in the Kyoto Study Abroad program offered by the Landscape Department at the University of Oregon from 2006 to 2016.
I love pléin-air painting, because I enjoy being outdoors, especially in nature, experiencing the environment with all of my senses. No matter how the results turn out, I appreciate the process of painting from which I deepen my perception of what I observe.
