PLAYA Awards

PLAYA has partnered with the following organizations to provide Award Residencies to diverse artists and scientists from around the world. To confirm current status of these competitions, please check with PLAYA at 541-943-3983 or with the partner organization.

Diverse Western Voices Award

The Diverse Western Voices Award has been given to a journalist of color for a project of deep reporting and narrative journalism that covers an under-represented community in the American West. Through collaboration with High Country News’ editorial team, PLAYA offers a residency of time and solitude, to encourage work on the American West’s ecological, social, and political issues.

Society for Photographic Education

PLAYA partners with the Society for Photographic Education to give a residency as part of the SPE Imagemakers Award. SPE  is a nonprofit membership organization that provides and fosters an understanding of photography as a means of diverse creative expression, cultural insight, and experimental practice.

Women Writing the West

Northwest Film Center / Oregon Film

PLAYA is excited to initiate a partnership with the Northwest Film Center and Oregon Film to award a residency to the Oregon filmmaker chosen annually by its two partner organizations.

The Barry Lopez Fellowship

Awarded through Hugo House Press, each year PLAYA gives a residency to an author chosen by the Press. Inspired by author and PLAYA alum Barry Lopez’s stunning body of literature, the prize attracts applicants from all over the world. www.hugohousepublishers.com

Waterston Desert Writing Prize

The Waterston Desert Writing Prize is given annually to honor literary nonfiction that illustrates artistic excellence, sensitivity to place, and desert literacy – with the desert as both subject and setting. Inspired by author and poet Ellen Waterston’s love of the high desert of central Oregon, the prize recognizes the vital role deserts play worldwide in the ecosystem and human narrative. Winners of the award receive a cash prize as well as a residency at PLAYA.
