Enjoy group dinners provided by PLAYA, evening presentations on the geology of Oregon’s high desert, and field trips on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday for hands-on exploration of the geologic forces that have shaped this spectacular region.

This package includes a 3-night stay in cabin #4, registration for Geology of Oregon’s High Desert, and 3 group dinners as listed in the workshop description below.

Choose “single” for one workshop registration and single cabin occupancy.

Choose “double” for two workshop registrations and double cabin occupancy.

This spacious 1 bedroom cabin is part of the southern trio of cabins that faces the playa. It has a queen bed, a full kitchen with dining table and chairs and a large bathroom with a shower. Includes a large writing/work desk in the living room as well as a small art and writing studio off of the bedroom. Enjoy the private wrap-around deck with expansive views of the playa and the surrounding mountains. This cabin can sleep up to 4 people with use of the full-size fold-out futon in the living room and a twin cot that can be placed either in the living room or the writing studio.

*Please note that the tub room has been converted into a writing/art studio. The tubs have been removed in an effort to conserve water in support of our environmental mission. Only non-toxic art materials can be used in the studio.

Geology of Oregon’s High Desert

Skill Level: All are welcome

Mobility Level: Easy to moderate (adaptable to your comfort level). The group will drive to various geological locations that will include walking on dirt, gravel and uneven terrain. There will be optional opportunities for participants to explore more moderate walks close by.   

Materials: Daniele will provide digital hand-outs with the option to request printed copies for an additional $10 payable to the instructor.

Workshop Description:

In this 3-night experience, discover and explore the extraordinary geology of the Summer Lake and Christmas Valley regions with geologist Daniele McKay. Enjoy group dinners provided by PLAYA, evening presentations on the geology of Oregon’s high desert, and field trips on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday for hands-on exploration of the geologic forces that have shaped this spectacular region. Areas visited will include Summer Lake, Ana River, Hole-in-the-Ground, Fort Rock, Crack-in-the-Ground, and the Lake Abert area. Field trip stops will highlight the region’s remarkable geology and cultural history, exploring active faulting and volcanism, records of past climate change, and archaeological sites. 

This workshop starts on Thursday evening with a group dinner provided by PLAYA and an after-dinner presentation on regional geology. PLAYA will also provide group dinners on Friday and Saturday evenings. All other meals are on your own.

Instructor Bio:

Dr. Daniele McKay is an instructor in the Department of Earth Sciences at the University of Oregon. She lives in Bend, Oregon and teaches online geology courses throughout the academic year, and field courses in central Oregon during the summer. Her research background is in physical volcanology with a focus on recent mafic eruptions in the central Oregon Cascades. She is also interested in how societies prepare for and respond to natural disasters, especially volcanic eruptions and earthquakes. She has worked with Deschutes County, the Oregon Office of Emergency Management, Oregon Partnership for Disaster Resilience, and the Red Cross on natural hazard preparedness and mitigation in central Oregon.

Day 4: Sunday, Oct. 13: Optional morning group field trip, or time or your own at the PLAYA campus | Depart by noon
