Visual artist Polly Lanning Sparrow lives and works in Austin, Texas, where she received an MFA and BFA in painting from The University of Texas. For Sparrow, seeking a vital kind of geometric abstraction remains essential: Paintings that, with their various rhythms and disruptions, bring the viewer immediately and fully into the act of seeing and contemplating. In an essay on Sparrow’s work, art historian Ann Reynolds describes these abstractions as “bits of displaced architecture [&] linguistic objects with insinuated yet unstable meanings.” Sparrow’s work is exhibited and collected throughout the U.S. She is the recipient of a MacDowell Colony Fellowship and was an artist in residence at the Chinati Foundation in Marfa.
