Experience + Camping | Outback Dark Sky Celebration (April 16-20, 2026)

Price range: $350.00 through $410.00

This purchase includes a 4-night stay in a reserved camping or camper van spot at PLAYA, registration for Outback Dark Sky Celebration PLAYA Experience, and 1 group dinner as listed in the Experience description below.

Tent campers camp on the meadow (pictured). Dry van/car campers park in the parking area next to the OpenSpace building (pictured), or on the meadow as space allows. As a tent or van/car camper, you will have access to the Garden House, close to the PLAYA garden and main Commons lodge. As Garden House is our hostel-style cabin, you will share the large kitchen, dining area, living room, and bathroom with the other bedroom renter as well as anyone who camps in the garden (a maximum of 4 other people). Please note that the refrigerator is a shared appliance, so labeling your food is encouraged. Other kitchen appliances include microwave, oven with range, and coffee maker. The kitchen is stocked with utensils, plates, cups, bowls, and cookware. The large bathroom includes toilet, sink and shower/bath, along with a washer and dryer. The house comes furnished with bedding, towels, and furnished dining and lounge area.

Use of power outlets in the shared spaces in Garden House or Commons building is welcome. If you need a power hookup to your camper van, please bring an extension cord at least 30 feet long. Gas stoves OK. No pets or outdoor campfires allowed.

Choose “single” for single camping occupancy and residency for one person. Choose “double” for double camping occupancy and residency for two people (even if sharing one tent or camper van).

Join us during International Dark Sky Week for this 4-night Experience! This weekend includes a private presentation about Dark Skies and a guided Star Party led by experts, the optional Community Dark Sky Party + Open Mic Night, and a dinner prepared by PLAYA’s house chef.

Attendees of this experience will learn the value of the dark sky, how to protect it, and how to appreciate it. They will also get a crash course in observational astronomy. We will learn to appreciate the dark sky through naked-eye sky tours, binocular observing, and telescopic observing. Optional activities integrating art include: night sky photography, simple astroimaging, and a creative writing activity inspired by the dark sky led by Amy Minato.

This weekend, PLAYA also hosts the Community Dark Sky Star Party + Open Mic Night, a family event for our Lake County neighbors! Neighbors and friends visit PLAYA for Dark Sky viewings led by seasoned educators and astronomers, activities, cozy treats, and an open mic night. Feel free to join for this event (taking place in and around the Commons), or have the evening to yourself. The rest of the time during this long weekend at PLAYA is yours to enjoy as you would like.

This Experience is for adults only. Out of town families wishing to participate in the free Community Dark Sky Star Party + Open Mic Night on April 18 can find lodging accommodations at the Summer Lake Hot Springs, Paisley Sage Rooms, The Lodge at Summer Lake, or in the National Forest or BLM lands.

PLAYA Experiences offer you time and space on the PLAYA campus for your own creative, restful, or exploratory pursuits as well as time spent learning from an expert! Experiences are like Self-Directed Residencies, but elevated with a dinner and a field trip, evening presentation, and/or special event.
